New Portal and Welcome Page

Filed Under (Announcements) by Skyrover on 17-06-2008

By now you might have noticed that the Skyrove Portal Page (the very first page you see) and the Welcome Page (the one you see once you’re logged in) have changed quite dramatically! Many thanks goes to rockstar designer Adii!

Comparing the old with the new:

The Old Portal Page

Old Portal Page

The New Portal Page

New Portal Page

We discovered a few problems with the old page. Firstly, we had the contact details at the top. This was in the spirit of making it as easy as possible for people to find our phone number. See Seth Godin’s Knock Knock eBook on Web Design on why this is (usually) a good idea. However, this actually confused many people. They didn’t want to phone us, they simply wanted to get online! Many people thought that they had to SMS or phone us before they could start using Skyrove. So we’ve moved the contact details to the bottom and now make it clear that this is for when you need Help!

Another common problem was that First Timers often didn’t know where to start! Initially we had a small Sign Up link below the username and password fields. This also confused a lot of people. We then moved it up the page, which is essentially the first obvious position for a FIRST time user. But we needed to make it bigger and bolder!

Let’s have a look at the Welcome Page:

The Old Welcome Page

The New Welcome Page

New Welcome Page

As you can see, the differences are even more glaring here. We’ve noticed that since our last change a lot of people didn’t open the Status Window anymore. There was no real need for it unless you needed detailed information, but that this was a bit of a nuisance factor. What we do now, instead, is to simply show the relevant info as a Status Section on the Welcome Page. If you’d rather have a separate window, you can simply click on Pop Out.

Importantly, if you now close this Pop Out, you will NOT be logged off! (What do you think about this change?)

We are committed to making some changes to the Welcome Page, based on the feedback we get from you! So please leave a comment. The first 20 users to leave a comment will receive a 100 Skyrove credits.

Hope to hear from you!

LOVING IT!!! I have had little problems with the login process eversince I started using Skyrove - like for instance having to “login” twice, or the login page telling me that I’ve used the wrong username/password..the new setup works immediately, and it looks much nicer!!! Keep up the good work guys!!!!

I love the new page

Zayne Imam on June 18th, 2008 at 9:11 am #

I think it’s great, visually appealing and very functional.

:)

Sithembewena Lloyd Dube on June 18th, 2008 at 9:45 am #

Wow…very nice mods to the interface (CSS?) - great overall feel to it!

Johann Bergh on June 18th, 2008 at 10:48 am #

Looks alot better guys! The old one was very static and ‘unfriendly’. Congrats!

Daniel Malament on June 18th, 2008 at 11:38 am #

This is new page is excellent. It looks far more professional than the previous pages. I feel as though I am signing in to a proper internet provider as opposed to an email service. It simply has more character.

Awesome skyrove!!! It’s so bloody nice and user friendly. So bloody welcoming.

Michael Jacobs on June 18th, 2008 at 12:29 pm #

I like the new look, but what i would like to see is perhaps getting forwarded to the page you wanted to see before having to sign in (eg home page). Maybe even if its in a new window/tab.

Regarding not getting logged off when closing the status window, i think its a good thing. have logged myself off so many times by accident… Also maybe open status window by default? When i started out i often puzzled to log off once closing the welcome tab by accident.

I think it’s nice. It seems user-friendly.

Can I get my free credit now? :o)

Really like the new layout–funky and appealing! Also easier to navigate and just feels more user-friendly. Thanks!

My Virgin Attempt at UI / UX Design…

Part of the process of revitalizing my design portfolio, has been to take on new projects that challenges me and that enables me to showcase my new-found skills. So along with the photography portfolio I did for Christine Meintjes a while back, the re…

Lekker om na login te sien hoeveel krediete oor het. Username en password se font is bietjie klein/moeilik leesbaar.

Michael on June 18th, 2008 at 3:04 pm #

Very nice. The whole service seem much more professional, now. You moved to the next level :)

And thanks for removing the logout function, when we close the popup.

S Sinclair on June 18th, 2008 at 3:08 pm #

It’s not remembering my login information. The new info/stats are nice, but it’d still be great if there were some way to log off even if you accidentally close the login tab or window (instead of having to disable the wireless connection).

Michael on June 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm #

Maybe something like preferences a user can set? Then would it be possible that everybody just defines if he want to be logged out or not, by closing the popup / window

Reinhardt on June 18th, 2008 at 4:04 pm #

It looks very trendy and profesional

Eric on June 18th, 2008 at 4:51 pm #

gives the site a personal feel

Arjan on June 18th, 2008 at 9:15 pm #

Inoba on June 18th, 2008 at 9:34 pm #

I really like the new set up, it’s fresh!!!

Sithembewena Lloyd Dube on June 19th, 2008 at 1:34 am #

Just a note again; like S.Sinclair, i also cannot get auto-completion when logging in after an initial logon. This worked in the previous version.Could it be an issue with setting cookies?

Also, it would be nice to have an AJAX widget on the status page that continuosly refreshes my bandwidth usage stats - its a bit cumbersome to have to refresh the page all to do so ;) Also worked previously.

David Ramsay on June 19th, 2008 at 6:22 am #

loving the new design very sleek, love the data transfer info on the front page!

Douglas Stewart on June 19th, 2008 at 8:40 am #

Heya Skyrove,

Loving the new interface!!

Only thing is Im experiencing a similiar to problem to S.Sinclair and S.Lloyd Dube: No auto completion after initial login. Have flushed cookies and deleted browsing history etc etc.

Other than that, awesome work Rockstar!

Maja on June 19th, 2008 at 2:46 pm #

I really miss the status window…

Skyrover on June 19th, 2008 at 3:29 pm #

@Maja The Status Window is still available! At the bottom of the new Status section in the Welcome Page, simply click “PopOut”!

Skyrover on June 19th, 2008 at 3:34 pm #

Some things we’ll change as a result of your comments:

1. We’ll make some fonts a bit bigger and add some contrast to make ‘em more readable.
2. We’ll fix the ‘Remember Login’ feature!
3. We’ll make the PopOut button stand out a bit more!

Thanks so much for all the comments! And keep ‘em coming!

Nicola Morris on June 19th, 2008 at 6:00 pm #

Old site remembered my user name and log on, this one doesnt, which takes more time, other than that, very trendy, like it!

Neha on June 19th, 2008 at 7:21 pm #

I like the look of the new format- it looks more sleek and modern. Everything for the most part is still the same so it made the transition easier. It would have been useful to have had a warning before hand that changes were going to be made. Overall though, it is better.

Molly Blank on June 19th, 2008 at 8:41 pm #

Everytime I log on, even though I check the box that says remember Login, I have to retype my username and password! So annoying!

Clyde on June 20th, 2008 at 9:30 am #

Why do I have to full in all the details every time I need to login ?

Margaret on June 22nd, 2008 at 8:17 am #

We still seem to have to log in twice? Which is very irritating!
At least the Log-Out button now appears to work first time.
I don’t like the childish writing - we are all adults after all?
maybe you can get rid of that soon?
Otherwise, it’s great!

Jason Prince on June 23rd, 2008 at 5:21 am #

It still does not remember login info. Otherwise it looks great and performs extremely well.

Beryl Brown on June 23rd, 2008 at 7:17 am #

The only problem is that you have to type your info everytime - could you user name and password not be there like it was before??

Skyrover on June 23rd, 2008 at 7:33 am #

The “Remember Login” function is working again, thanks for letting us know about the problem

Tara on June 23rd, 2008 at 8:21 am #

Hi, think the new design is very funky. I like the handwriting and little arrows :) I still have to type my info in every time I sign in because my “remember login” doesn’t work so not sure if that problem is actually fixed.
